La Liga:  Athletico Bilbao Beat Real Madrid 2-1 Kylian Mbappe Penalty Missed

Champions Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Wednesday after Kylian Mbappe missed another penalty. The French superstar suffered further agony from 12 yards out as Los Blancos enabled league leaders Barcelona to maintain their four-point lead, one week after he missed the penalty kick in the Champions League match against Liverpool. Jude Bellingham tied the score for Madrid following Mbappe's missed spot, but Alejandro Berenguer gave Bilbao the lead early in the second half.

What Transpired?

However, a Fede Valverde error in the 80th minute allowed replacement Gorka Guruzeta to steal fourth-place Athletic's triumph. After receiving a lot of criticism in recent weeks, the loss and Mbappe's missed penalty will put additional strain on the former Paris Saint-Germain star. Coach Carlo Ancelotti brought French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni back into the starting lineup as Madrid looked to build on three straight La Liga victories, despite missing Vinicius Junior and other injured players. While his brother Inaki Williams was lurking dangerously, Thibaut Courtois made a crucial early intervention to deny Spain winger Nico Williams.

There weren't many obvious opportunities in the first half, but one was played fiercely in front of a crowded San Mames stadium. The referee considered a Rodrygo penalty claim but determined the Brazilian winger went down too easily after Mbappe struck the net but the goal was disallowed for offside. Berenguer should have given the home team the lead at the other end, but he was set up by Inaki Williams' deft backheel and blasted far over the bar.

What Next for Real Madrid

I played very well, according to Mbappe in madrid’s equalizer, though, with the malicious energy from the distance that that stopper could only have to push out into the path of Bellingham, who finish tidily for his fourth goal in his last four league games.

After two minutes of Madrid being tied, Guruzeta gave Bilbao the lead again by stealing the ball as Valverde was about to pass and shooting low past Courtois. In the last moments, Mbappe looked deflated, as the Bilbao defense promptly stopped one effort to break down the left to wild applause from their ecstatic fans.
